Esperanza Rising is a fictional novel loosely based on the author's grandmother and her journey to California from Mexico.
We will be exploring this novel while looking closely how changes in environment or community can change the way an individual character like Esperanza acts and feels. One of the important themes of this book includes how people come together to create a community. We will be applying this theme to our classroom to better create a Classroom Community of our own.
Unit Objectives:
By the end of this unit on Esperanza Rising, students will be able to:
Identify the basic elements of plot including setting, conflict, rising action, climax and resolution in this text
Identify characters and the traits that define their personalities
Recognize points of view including 1st and 3rd person point of view
Note how characters change through movements in the plot
